Mosquito problem? There's an app for that
Wouldn't it be great if you could download an app to your mobile phone that would repel mosquitoes? A top 10 app in 56 countries, the 'Anti-Mosquito Sonic Repeller' hit iTunes stores earlier this year. Emitting a sound inaudible to humans that mosquitoes hate, the idea is not new or untested. In fact, before smart phone apps, the sound was emitted through a plug-in or battery operated device. But to the question on everyone's lips, does it work?
A mosquito expert from the University of Sydney says the claims are "completely false. Time and time again various devices that emit sound have been promoted and sold to deter mosquitoes but there's no scientific evidence." So what do experts recommend? The most effective repellant is prevention. Empty, drain, or cover all things that hold water. Maintain swimming pools with proper care and repair or prevent outside leaks. Mow lawns weekly and eliminate nooks, crannies, and holes.
