Possums are mostly arboreal (tree-dwelling) marsupials. There are two main species of possum that are a pest and invade roof cavities, the brushtail possum and the ringtail possum.
Common brushtail - This species varies in colour from silver-grey to black and off-white to red/brown below. Its tail is bushy with a naked area below the tip and it has large pointed ears, large claws and an aggressive nature.
Common ringtail possum - This possum is mostly grey to black with red/brown tinges. It has a long white-tipped prehensile tail. This species is the friendlier of the two, but still should not be approached or provoked.
Both species naturally live in cavities in trees. They shelter there during the day and emerge to feed and explore at night. Possums enter roof voids mainly through broken tiles, damaged eaves and displaced ridge capping.
Once a possum is inside your roof, consider them there for a long time. It is important that the possums be relocated and the entry point be blocked to prevent them from entering in the future.
